Online guide: How to lay a patio

Remember to follow safety guidelines and wear appropriate protective gear, including gloves and safety glasses, when working with cement. Additionally, always check and follow the specific instructions provided by the Blue Circle cement manufacturer. Using our guidance is your own responsibility.

Step 1

Plan and Design
Measure and mark the area where you want to install the patio. Plan the layout and design of the patio. Consider the size and shape of the paving slabs.

Step 2

Excavation
Dig out the marked area to a depth that allows for the thickness of the paving slabs, a layer of hardcore or gravel and a concrete base. Usually, a depth of about 4-6 inches is sufficient.

Step 3

Footings for Retaining Wall
Dig a trench to create footings for a retaining wall around the border of the patio. Set levels for the final patio height using wooden pegs and string to ensure it is level and consistent across the area.

Step 4

Build the Retaining Wall
Follow the instructions on the bag to mix the ready-to-use Blue Circle High Strength Concrete, 40N. Pour the mixed concrete into the footings and spread it evenly using a shovel. When cured, build up the retaining wall using ready-to-use Blue Circle Quality Assured mortar.

Step 5

Adding a Gravel Base
Pour a layer of hardcore or gravel into the area within the retaining wall. This helps with drainage. Level and compact the gravel.

Step 6

Laying a Concrete Foundation
Mix ready-to-use Blue Circle General Purpose Concrete as a semi-dry mix and spread across the patio area. Cover and allow to cure for 24 hours.

Step 7

Laying Paving Slabs
Mix Blue Circle Mastercrete cement with sand and water as directed on the bag to create the bedding mortar for the slabs. Carefully place the paving slabs using the bedding mortar, starting from one corner and working your way across. Tap each slab into place with a rubber mallet to ensure they are level and secure.

Step 8

Finishing Touches
Fill the joints between the slabs with jointing sand or Blue Circle Quality Assured mortar to provide stability and prevent weed growth. Clean your tools promptly after finishing to prevent any material from hardening on them.

Step 9

Curing
Cover the patio area and allow paving to cure fully for 7 days before heavy use.
