Cyclist Safety

Health & Safety / Cyclist Safety

Members of the Group Logistics and Supply Chain team are working with the wider construction industry and a number of groups of the issue of cyclist safety, in the capital and throughout the UK. These groups include cycling groups, the Metropolitan Police, Mineral Products Association (MPA), Transport for London (TfL), and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA).

Our national fleet is already Bronze accredited by the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) – a scheme operated by TfL to ensure driver standards – and we are planning to achieve Gold by the end of 2014. Our contract hauliers are currently in the process of being accredited by our Transport Supervisors - something that only Tarmac is accredited to do within the industry. All of our hauliers will also have completed Vulnerable Road User (VRU) training – which raises awareness of cyclist safety issues – by the end of 2014.

We have also taken a number of measures to ensure that our vehicles are as safe as possible for cyclists. All of our new vehicles (contract hauliers and our own) have been fitted with approved safety equipment as standard since mid 2012 and those under 8 years old are in the process of being retrofitted with safety equipment, at our expense. This is a full two years ahead of the MPA target and the majority of our competitors.
